Located on the Patapsco River, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore has grown to have the largest city proper population in the state of Maryland and the 26th largest in the USA with a population of 641,342. In addition, Baltimore holds the 20th spot for largest metropolitan population at 2.7 million people. When Baltimore was founded in 1792 it's major economic activity was manufacturing being that it was one of the largest port cities on the East coast. Baltimore switched to a service based economy after a decline in manufacturing. The two largest employers in Baltimore are Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University.

With a city proper population of 2.7 million and a metropolitan population of 9.5 million, Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois and the third largest city in the USA. The seat of Cook County was incorporated as a city in 1837. Since then, Chicago has grown into an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation, with O'Hare International being the second-busiest airport in the world in terms of traffic movements. Chicago is also home to many major skyscrapers such as the Willis Tower, John Hancock Building, and trump International Hotel and Tower.

Settled in 1788, in Hamilton County, Ohio, Cincinnati is located on the Ohio River at the Ohio-Kentucky border, near Indiana. In the 19th century, Cincinnati experienced a population boom that transformed it into the first major inland city of the USA. However, by the end of the 19th century, Cincinnati was surpassed by Chicago and St. Louis, two other Midwestern cities. Cincinnati now boasts a city proper population of 296,943 and a metropolitan population of 2,138,038, making it the 3rd largest city in Ohio and the 32nd largest city in the USA.

Columbus is now the largest city in Ohio and the 15th largest city in the USA based on city proper population, with an impressive 787,033. Columbus also has a metropolitan population of 2,308,509. In addition, Columbus is home to many large corporations such as: Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, American Electric Power, L Brands, Big Lots, Cardinal Health, and Wendy's. Columbus has received many honorable ranking by magazines, including BusinessWeek's 50 best cities in America in 2012 and number 1 up-and-coming tech city in the nation by Forbes in 2008.

Indianapolis is the county seat of Marion County and is also the capital and most populous city in Indiana. It is the 13th largest city in the USA based on city proper with a population of 820,445 and it has the 34th largest metropolitan population in the USA with a population of 1,756,241. In the past Indianapolis has focused primarily on government and manufacturing, but recently has has a large increase in tourism, as Indianapolis plays host to many major sporting events including the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, NHRA U.S. Nationals, NCAA Basketball Tournament, and Super Bowl XLVI. Indianapolis was ranked as one of the best downtowns in America with more than 200 retail shops, more than 35 hotels, nearly 300 restaurants and food options, movie theaters, sports venues, museums, art galleries and parks.

Louisville is the largest city in the commonwealth of Kentucky. It has a city proper population of 741,096 putting it at 27th in the USA for that category. For metropolitan population Louisville is ranked 42nd nationally with a population of 1,334,872. Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby, three of Kentucky's six Fortune 500 companies, the University of Louisville, and its airport is the worldwide air hub for UPS.

Pittsburgh is the seat of Allegheny county and has the 2nd largest city proper population in the state of Pennsylvania, at 306,211 people. With a metropolitan population of 2,360,733, it is the 22nd largest city in the USA. Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers and the source of the Ohio River. Due to the three rivers, Pittsburgh is known as the City of Bridges due to its world-record of 446 bridges. Pittsburgh is also known as the Steel City as it has over 300 steel-related businesses. Pittsburgh is also home to 29 skyscrapers and two inclined railways.
